Animation is a way of bringing life and colour to static Web pages.
On the right is the UltraComputing logo from Sun, animated by the AdamWeb team, which provides an immediate visual impression of the concept of high technology and business effectiveness.
Below are some more examples of what can be achieved for different types of web site, in this case sport and heritage.

What would Nelson
think of all this?
These effects are created by the browser from animated GIF files.
And just for fun, the AdamWeb bowling alley :

Java can also be used to provide colour and dynamism in web pages, for example:
The AIA Java Panel
Displays such as this can communicate a lot of information very effectively. An additional option (not shown here) is to make the alternating pictures into hyperlinks.

Moving text can be generated in Internet explorer with the marquee tag. In Netscape this would be done with a Java ticker tape Applet:
Above text moves in Internet Explorer, stationary in Netscape
Green text blinks in Netscape, not in Internet Explorer
However, there is much more to Java than this, it is a universal language that works across the internet. It is platform independent, and can be used to write complete applications which can be uploaded as applets from the server making the so-called thin client a reality.
Click on the applets below to return to AdamWeb
When your mouse moves over the applets, various ghosts appear.
This is achieved with our Javascript imgOnG3
(Netscape 3, IE 4 or later)
