Database Technology

Information Technology is built on databases, and in 25 years of software development AIA has had experience of most of them. One of AIA's top consultants has recently completed a PhD course in Database Theory in which he obtained First Class Honours. A commitment to theory is essential for the design of large databases, but AIA also keeps in mind that the database is a tool which must deliver practical results for the end user.

Some examples of AIA's database expertise are :

Research Chemicals - Oracle RDB

This large and complex database consists of 250 tables and 350 indexes as at the latest count. The database is distributed over a wide area network across Europe, and enables a large multi national corporation to fulfil orders from universities, research institutions, etc, frequently within 24 hours.

Sales History - Interbase

A frequent requirement is to accumulate all details of Sales History into a large and constantly expanding database. AIA has built such systems for Food Importers, Agricultural merchants and Wholesale Distributors. The largest such database is currently 27 gigabytes, and allows the companies' marketing department to analyse sales in the finest detail.
Platform : Sun SPARCserver

Legal - Sybase

Time recording and accounting data is accumulated in a database which is used to provide management information and new accounting requirements.
Platform: Sun SPARCserver

Agriculture - Informix

By recording contract details, Samples and myriad other details in an Informix database, the user is provided with a highly flexible Management Information System.
Platform : Sun SPARCserver

Wholesale Distribution - ADAM

The ADAM database is ideal for the high speed transaction processing and stock recording required in Distribution. ADAM pioneered the use of hash keys for locating specific data such as Customers, Products and Invoices directly (without searching), a feature which has now been adopted by other database providers. Another high speed feature is the rapid reorganisation of indexes : an index containing 750,000 items can be reordered in minutes.
Platform : Sun SPARCserver

Litigation - Paradox

Complex litigation can depend on the swift presentation of vast amounts of data in a form acceptable to the Courts. AIA built the database behind one of the most complex cases of the 1990s, resulting in a successful action.
Platform : Novell PC Network

Church Membership - Access

AIA has designed countless small to medium sized databases such as one for church membership using Access.
Platform : Novell PC Network

Database Front Ends

AIA is becoming increasingly involved in providing Windows front ends for various databases. These range from object orientated development tools such as Microsoft Visual Basic or Borland Delphi, to standard spreadsheets, quite apart from the database providers' own products. An example of the latter is Paradox used to front end Interbase (both from Borland).
