RYA Windsurfing

South East U17

Welcome from Trevor Jones

Trevor Jones

The South East's programme aims to offer training and experience of Course racing based at three venues : Ardingly Activity Centre, AquaSports at Mercers Park and Bewl Water Sailing club.

Aspiring racers should be able to use a harness and sail a triangular course.

The Calypso Junior-One-Design, 103 and Aloha are the main classes raced, but any longboard will do. Calypsos and Aloha boards are available from Ardingly and AquaSports as are 6.5, 103 and JOD rigs, but prior arrangement is essential.

For the use of RYA boards/rigs at race training sessions or for regional squad events, no charge is made. For longer periods of use, the equipment may be hired at very competitive rates. If you are seriously considering a race campaign, then the purchase of your own gear would be recommended.

The dates and venues page shows the training sessions and events, and is constantly updated. The idea is that young windsurfers can extend their range of experience by targeting any of these. If enough sailors are interested in any one event, then I will endeavour to come along to assist.

This year the South East squad is particularly looking to compete in the inter-regional events such as the Twiname and Carsington . I am also very keen to attract more young windsurfers from Kent schools and clubs. The Kent Schools Sailing Association (KSSA) has once again offered the opportunity to compete in the RYA/KSSA Regatta in October and, as last year, it would be good to see a squad at the National Schools Finals (NSSA). As in previous years, I would especially encourage you to attend the RYA Rallies such as Roadford, and RYA Camps such as Calshot at Easter or Rutland in July. Further info or advice can be sought from the RYA or me.

This year also sees the start of a new racing award scheme. The higher levels (Silver and Gold) are only attainable via the Regional sessions or the Inter-Regional Camps.

Guest coaching, freestyle competitions and visits to events are again also planned for this year.

A fee of £5 is payable on the day. Rescue cover is provided. See you there!
